THE EYES QUILT

The amazing quilt created by Lancaster Against Pipelines inspired us to do a quilt for the Pennsylvania Climate Convergence that will help us transition from Convergence 2023 to Convergence 2024. The squares of LAP's quilt were created by people opposing the Atlantic Sunrise Pipeline. When it was finished, the panels of the quilt spanned 50', the width of the pipeline right-of-way.

The squares of our quilt will tell the stories of the people across Pennsylvania who create them. Our organizing theme this year is Bearing Witness. The repeating motif of the quilt will be the symbol of an eye on each square that is otherwise decorated by its maker with words, visuals, and objects that tell their climate story.

But when we debut the completed quilt at the 2024 Pennsylvania Climate Convergence, the eyes facing the Capitol will send a different message that we are watching our state government.

We're kicking off the creation of the quilt at the festival on October 1. Visitors will be able to design their own squares that day. We'll continue to collect squares, stitching them into panels as we go.

Making a square is easy!

  1. Cut a square piece of fabric, 14 x 14 inches. The material should be lightweight and not stretchy (think bedsheet, not t-shirt).

  2. Mark a border of 1 1/2 inches on all 4 sides so the finshed square is 11 x 11 inches.

  3. Start creating! Design your square with paints, fabric, iron-on photos, beads, markers, etc. And don't forget to include the shape of an eye on your square. If you need to trace one or print it on fabric you can affix to your square, here are some samples you can download.

  4. Please put your name, contact information, and any message you would like to add on an index card to send along with your square.

  5. Mail your squares to Karen Feridun, 260 East Main Steet, Kutztown, PA 19530.

And if you would like to help sew the 5' x 5' panels, let us know!

Special thanks goes to Grace Warmingham of Lancaster Against Pipelines who shared all of her instructions and tips with us!
